For internet, I have a verizon usb thingy that I can pay as I go. I will be using that.

Thanks to this thread I went to best buy and got one too. Feeling much better about the storm now since I work at home and have some deadlines this week.

Does it actually charge up the laptop, or just keep the battery from draining further?

Depends on the car. My VW does not need to be running but I know some cars do. Other cars will work without running the engine but the key must be in the "on" position.

Is it safe to charge a laptop (I have a Macbook) with any of these inverters? I looked online at an auto parts store near me and they offer several different kinds/different watts. I don't want to damage my computer.

I can use my phone as a mobile hotspot. It burns through the battery like crazy though. So if I needed to I could get online and communicate with the outside world.

Not the OP but I can use my iPhone as a mobile hotspot. It costs $20 more a month than the regular data plan. For those who are anxious it might be worth signing up for the service now. You can always turn it off after the threat of power outages are over. I think I can have 3 users on my hotspot.

You can tether your phone to your laptop to share the internet connection or use it to set up a mobile hotspot.

Yeah -- when we lose power at my house, we also lose internet access.

You can charge the battery. Car needs to be on (at least mine does).

You need a DC to AC power inverter. You should be able to find one at Best Buy or an auto store. Perhaps even Target.

Like this.

If things are going to be bad and my workplace is not off, I will have to work from home. I am anticipating power outage so is there any way I can charge my laptop in the car?

Please give me a brand or link. Thanks!
