The best lox in NYC is russ and daughters. You can order on line and they ship it overnight. Get the gaspe. Russ and daughters is a ny legend and worth every penny. It puts the stuff around here to shame. You can also get bagels and hommead cream cheese.

Many years ago, when we were on an Alaskan cruise, we stopped in Juneau and I found this wonderful little shop called Taku Smokeries which is now on the web at http://www.takustore.com (it wasn't when we found it). They have some of the best lox that I've ever had outside of NYC. One thing I love is that they immediately freeze what they make, including the fresh and smoked salmon products. They ship to buyers overnight or two-day delivery in sealed cooler containers with frozen gel packs to maintain freshness. And if you participate in their green recycling program and return the styrofoam cooler, then you get a credit for your next purchase. I've had their lox fresh in their store in Alaska and at home and it's pretty darn close and far better than anything I've gotten locally. Lox is listed under "Cold Smoked"

Are you talking about making it youself since you are only looking for salmon? I have not made lox, but have made gravlax which is pretty easy. You can get good, although pricey, salmon at Blacksalt. You can also mail order from Pike Place market in Seattle if you want Pacific salmon. Wagshals has a decent fish counter.

I'm so tired of buying the stuff pre-packaged from Whole Foods. Where can I get really fresh salmon in the area? We're in NOVA but at this point I'm willing to drive anywhere.
