I just started my first teaching job this year and with a Master's degree, I am making around $46K in a MD public school (not MCPS). The thing that many people don't realize is how much money teachers spend out of their own pockets each year. My school is a Title One school so hardly any of the kids bring in school supplies (so I have to buy them myself). I spent easily $600 on my classroom and will probably spend at least another $100-200 before the year is out. Wealthier school districts have school supplies and sometimes their PTA will even reimburse teachers a certain amt. of money if they show receipts. My friend's school gives her up to $200 each year if she gives the PTA rep her receipts. I get nothing b/c not too many parents can even afford to join the PTA.

Yep.

I do know how much teachers make. I feel they are underpaid, and the teachers I know all spend lots of their time at home on lesson plans and grading schoolwork, and during the summers they are often taking classes, so it makes me angry when I hear "they only work 10 months".

Teaching is no piece of cake -- go spend a day in a school and you'll have a new appreciation for the profession.

It's about average in MoCo.

I'm in my 3rd year in MCPS, have a MEd, and make $51k. It's my second career, and pays much less than my first one, but I enjoy it much more.

My SIL (not in MoCo) makes 38k with a masters in elementary education and 5 years experience.

It's public record. The salary scale is available on the MCPS site. If you know whether the teacher has an advanced degree and approximately how long they've been teaching, you can get a good guess.

It took three years of work for me to surpass my mothers salary as a masters degree level teacher of + 25 years and I just have a bachelors

I agree teachers are underpaid and thier student under taught.

Great point OP! Not to mention that their work day almost never ends when school ends and they spend a lot of their own money for supplies.

Those of you complaining about teachers getting raises, please tell me what you think your teacher makes?

My SO just career changed into teaching, and frankly, how much he makes is an embarassment if we really want quality people moving into teaching.

I don't want to hear crap about teachers only working 10 months, because they still need to feed their families for 12 months. If the flip side is that you'll pay teachers more if the position were 12 months, then I say let's send the kids to school for 12 month. People don't go into teaching for the 2 months off and they certainly don't go into it for the money.
