She has a baby AND a preschooler.

None of this makes sense to me. Just say 'don't mean to kick you out, but Jr. has to go down!' etc. Do you people have no experience interacting with others?

Oh my OP: I thought I overstayed a recent play date so was so curious about your post. I stayed for a little over 2 hours of a dinner play date. Not nearly 5. goodness.

I've told people to leave before...but with notice. Llike we are going to put toddler to bed ina bout 30 min...

5 hours? Holy cow! Next time say "well, I hate to cut this short, but we have to run errands/go somewhere but let's do this again soon!

You need to tell people to leave. You may have led them to believe you wanted them to stay.

Yes, I designate a time when scheduling a playdate, and usually it's for 2 hours. However, now that my dd is 6.5, I think she is ready for a longer playdate. I am not sure if I'm ready, but she certainly had lots more things she wanted to do when the playdate ended on Saturday.

oh my god - this has happened to me!!! playdate at 3 and at 5, they were still there... hubby called at 6 to say he was on the way home... they were still there. i actually said, well, my little ones are ready for dinner, so i'm going to give them dinner. would your kids like to eat?

"no, they're ok, they'll eat later..."

i take both kids to kicthen (on another floor of the house from where we were playing) and proceed to feed them. her younger child wandered upstairs and i fed him, too.

hubby comes home and she is stoill there! hung out another 30 minutes while trying to figure out if she would pick up dinner or if her husband would... awkward!

I find it best to limit the time at the outset. E.g., "Playdate from 2-4pm, and we'll serve a snack!" And when 4pm approaches, just say, "Oh, the time is coming to an end! Let's do a little clean up, then listen to some music before we have to say goodbye."

In some cultures it's not rude to stick around. It's a sign that you're having fun. Americans are more on the "scheduled" side of things, I think!

Lol! I have had this happen more than once! Wth? I have literally had to walk one mom to the door after trying to cut it short saying we had things to do.
So annoying!

I got this advice on DCUM - when inviting them over, be very clear and up front on the timeframe - "Hi - we'd love it if you guys could come over from 10-1pm and play and have lunch with us ...." And if they don't leave at that time, just speak up and say "it's been great, but we really have errands to do/dinners to cook/afternoon plans" and ask when you could set up something else.
