I did not say upcounty kids go to RM and downcounty kids go to Blair. I said an uppercounty kid is more likely to go to RM or Poolesville. So if I have 5 kids in my school in magnet 4 go to RM or Poolesville - 1 might go to Blair. Mostly becaues it is a pain to get to Blair from upper county and there are so many other options. I know a principal and he said many parents who won't apply to Blair because of the commute. The ICC will help a little though.

To 8:33 I know multiple people in QO, Northwest and Clarksburg district that go to Poolesville magnet.

833 here, of course you do because if you are applying for science, math, computer magnet and you live in "northern" MC you have to go to Poolesville, those who live south have to go to Blair. Its cut and dry.... If you are applying to any of the other magnet programs for the most part you have to go down county..... i.e. Edison, Einstein...

If you do not live in DCC there are a whole array of magnets that you can't even apply for...

Its not fair for those who live in upper MC

No upper county kids go to Poolesville because its obligatory, downcounty go to Blair.

Not true that "most" think of Blair. Upcounty "most" think Poolesville or RM.

Here is a true list of "magnet" programs.

Well poster its not just people in Bethesda... There's Gaithersburg Damascus, Germantown, Derwwood, etc... Its understood that for HS magnet these upper county schools go to poolesville (also a hike and off the beaten trail) and there are the middle school magnets spread out.

However, there does seem to be more special programs around where the OP mentioned.. Most of the Immersion programs, the Takoma Park ES magnet, even the loiderman program. If you live up county you are in a very difficult position.

PP is correct about the busing idea - Blair used to be pretty ghetto, so they put the magnet program there. When I was in high school (early 90s), they played go-go at field day there.

if you are in Bethesda you have excellent local publics and don't really need to worry about magnets unless you are intersted in Blair or RM for high school.

There are a few "application" programs that get referred to as "magnets." At Blair, both the science and math program, and the communication arts program, are application programs. But only the science and math program gets called a magnet. I've heard different explanations for this. One explanation is that each school can only have a certain amount of extra resources like bussing. Another explanation I've heard is that CAP is only available within the Downcounty Consortium but the math-science magnet is open county-wide.

The RM and Poolesville magnets are not THE magnet. That is RM. MoCo has greatly expanded the 'magnet' label in response to the huge proportion of special snowflakes per capita.

Sorry, meant MB, not RM... when most say "magnet" they are referring to Blair, not so much the others.

Plus, aren't there magnets at Richard Montgomery and Poolesville?

Because the point of a magnet is to bring children from affluent families to schools with significant non-affluent populations.

There are no schools that meet this latter description in Bethesda.

Wondering whether to apply but we are in Bethesda and work in D.C. so these schools are pretty out of the way for us. We can't afford to go private.
