I start with a clean house and fresh air. Now this isn't for everyone, but I really like certain incense. Not an overpowering amount, though! I burn about a third of a stick of Nag Champa adn then put it out.

I saw this on Pinterest and it indicated that it was a "realtor's trick."

Put two caps full of vanilla extract in a coffee cup, then place it in the oven at 300 degrees for one hour. Within twenty minutes the whole house smells wonderful.

I always keep my windows open as much as possible. Can't stand the stuffy closed up smell of homes with always closed windows. I have allergies but deal with it. Would rather have the windows open.

Bake cookies!!!

Clean house (without harsh chemicals).
Open windows.
Store-bought lavender sachets.
Homemade orange peel bowls - but they don't last long.

We also open our windows and rely on fresh air with great success. Also make sure to keep your house clean.

I agree, open the windows as often as you can. It's the only thing that makes a house smell good without being perfumey.

If you LIKE perfumey, then go with natural ingredient sachets and pot pourri. (NOT the packaged stuff that has a bunch of chemical crap added.) Dried flowers and aromatic herbs, dried citrus peel, crushed spices... I've made a very nice lavender/ lemon sachet.

Mostly fresh air and keeping the place clean! But I also have a small mister that I fill with water and a few drops of essential oil (like citrus, rose geranium, etc.), which I sometimes spray. I don't think it lasts, really, but in the meantime it fills my urge for a nice-smelling house.

Lavender water spray on fabrics. Open windows as often as possible. Use baking soda instead of powdered deodorizer when vacuuming. Lemon juice to clean stove. Boil a small pot containing water and spices- cloves, cinnamon, etc.

We rely on fresh air. Even in the winter we open the windows for at least a few minutes a couple times a week. I worry about the chemicals and smoke in candles and air freshener.

How do you make your house smell nice and fresh without being overpowering? I don't want to use candles because of the fire hazard (18 month old and pets around), but I've always found the air-wick-type fresheners to be artificial and start out way overpowering, then fade really quickly.
