For that alone he gets my respect, though he almost lost it for dating Sheryl Crow. She bugs.

I'm more impressed that he managed to test clean time after time after time. He's guilty, they know he's guilty, but they can't catch him. And what's more, most of the public either doesn't care or think that since everyone else was doping and he's returned it's not a big deal anymore.

OP again - and I should add that what makes it so interesting is the whole narrative arc of Armstrong's story. From miraculous recovery from near-death experience to phenomenal cycling champion and national leader in the fight against cancer to flawed public figure who will most likely will be brought down in part due to his own hubris.

Seriously - if you look at how others have handled their doping pasts being made public, this is probably the least productive way to do it.

The USADA doesn't have authority to strip his titles - that's up to the international committee (I forget the acronym), and to date they've said that he can keep them.

OP here. Actually there are several of us who post about Armstrong. I'm interested because I follow professional cycling. I can't speak for the other folks, but since someone has posted about this a couple of times, I thought it would be okay to introduce this topic - first time I've actually introduced the topic rather than just commenting on it.

He cheated. They all cheated. I wish they would have left all the records intact for all the cheaters caught years later. The reality is, probably everyone who finished in the top 10? 20? 50? were all doping. Who are you going to award the metals to?

Catch them in the moment - I am fine with banning them. However it is up to the USADA to keep up with the new doping strategies and test accordingly. Creating a test ten years later that lets you go back and test samples and find out one was positive - who cares at that point. The cyclist teams outsophisticated the USADA.

I agree, if he would simply admit it (although that ship has sailed long ago) most people wouldn't care. But the fact that he continues to get all huffy, play the victim, and keep denying it all just makes him look like a douche.

USADA has no authority over Lance's tour wins. They can certainly publicize things that will influence the tour, but they can not strip him of the medals as the press has reported.

I think if Lance was tested during all those wins and didn't get caught, he should get to keep all those wins. Back testing is BS! If he beat the system at that time than that is all that should count.

Link above describes USADA's statement on the evidence that Lance doped. Many of Lance's former teammates have testified in the case. There will be hundreds of pages released later today.

George Hincapie, well-respected cyclist and former close friend of Lance's, admits to doping and appears to have given testimony that Lance doped, too.

Lance's legal team is blaming Big Tobacco, saying that USADA's law firm has also defended Big Tobacco companies and therefore is out to get Lance, who is a big anti-smoking advocate. That's a really sad and pathetic move. Still, there are people who will believe it. Lance, just confess and move on!
