We almost bought a house in Frederick County years ago, but got outbid. Ended up regrouping and finding a smaller place closer in, and for commuting reasons that was probably a good turn of events. But I have to say I heave a big sigh every time I drive by that big, beautiful property with its view of Sugarloaf. Wouldn't it be nice if we could have it all....

Can you talk to my husband? He keeps suggesting that we move to Reston and thinks the commute won't be that bad. I don't know how to convince him that it will be worse than he can imagine.

Even on a good day Charles County is a long commute. Not sure how anybody could make this decision...not being snarky but it just seems so obvious. What mental games did you play to convince yourself it would be okay when you were building?

@ 16:02 - "Suck it up or move on" is a little bitchy but I can't be mad. You're right. And we do have nice neighbors, quiet area, lots of nature around, etc. I guess I need to really start focusing on the positives instead. Man you give some tough love

Sometimes accidents happen and your commute will suck. It has taken me two hours to get from dc to olney a handful of times in the past few years....but I realize that our children have a better quality of life out here (great schools, nice community, riding bikes on trails, etc.). Suck it up or move on.

Sorry OP, I have buyers remorse, albeit for different reasons and it SUCKS!

If I were in your shoes I'd look for a new job or telecommute options.

@ 15:36 - I have my kindle and sometimes I can "zone out" but usually I'm staring out the window feeling sad for myself

@15:40 - We thought about it, planned it out, and drove the same route but honestly it wasn't bad. When you do it twice a day 5 days a week it's very different than a couple of attempts on random days

If you can afford two mortgages why not live in the city during the week and head to the country for the weekends.

The drive will not get better. You will hate it more.

I feel ya! I hate going to Waldorf during rush hour and I am not coming from DC.

I know the snarky comments aren't supposed to start yet but I'm shocked that you didn't think about the commute when you made the move. Is it really that you just didn't think about it (shortsighted) or that you thought you could overcome it somehow. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm truly curious as to how someone who was from here could 'unwittingly' make such a mistake.

Can you find ways to improve your commute - I download a bunch of podcasts on sundays to play. I also make all my phone calls (via Bluetooth!) to my mom, etc., to make it productive.

We are renting our house in the city and had a new home built in Charles County, MD. I like the features in our new home but hate the commute and it's just about driving me insane. Last night because of some accidents, the nats game, and the weather - it took 2 hours to get home! ARGGGGHHHHH I went to be angry, frustrated and full of regret. Woke this morning thinking it would be better and it was another hour and a half commute into work. Please tell me if you've experienced this and if it gets better. At this point, I'm counting down the days until the lease is up at the DC house and I'd be willing to pay 2 mortgages just for some sanity. FWIW I had it pretty easy before and could walk from the city house to work in 20 mins so I know its an adjustment period but it's been almost 1 year and I dread going home to what should be my dream house. Before the snarky remarks start - I've already beaten myself up enough about not looking into the commuting options before buying. We've tried the commuter bus, driving, and driving/metro - either way it's crazy traffic
