I have been blocking a ton of addresses lately because of spammers. I may have gotten yours by mistake or engaged in a bit of overkill. Can you please go to this site from your laptop:

http://whatismyipaddress.com

Note your IP number and then post it here from your phone? Then, if I've blocked it, I can unblock it.

Here is the long answer as to what is happening. The DCUM web server has RAID storage. The RAID card has a battery that has apparently gone bad. When the system senses that the battery is bad, it disables the RAID card's write cache. That causes writes to be slow. Then, if the server gets hit by a big load of writes -- such as many posters posting messages -- the database server stops writing to disk. Then, no posts. But, reading normally is fine except for things like the "recent posts" page which seems to stop working.

When I notice this, I've been rebooting the server which seems to fix the battery problem temporarily. This temporarily fixes the write cache problem which fixes the database problem, which means it works for you again.

The short answer is that I'll probably have to replace hardware on the server.

The last few days I've had troubles getting DCUM to load-- happens on my iPad using safari and on my Mac and PC using Firefox (but I'm not having problems accessing other websites). Sometimes I get an error message saying the server is not responding.

Is this just a ploy to get us to realize how addicted we are and if not, is there anything that can be done to reduce the chances of it happening?
