Here are some tips from one of my America's Test Kitchen cookbooks:

--buy one with a minimum of 6 quarts
--oval shape vs. round is more versatile
--keep warm function only make sense when cooker has a timer

West Bend Versatility was in the top 3 and is burner safe

Oops -- hit enter too fast.

The Cuisinart slow cooker is very good. My only caution is our insert ended up scratched and we had to get a new one.

A friend has the All-Clad slow cooker and has not had the issue we had with the insert getting scratched.

I've been able to find tons of friends who have the basic kind but without the option to brown or sear before I'm not that interested in stepping into the world of slow cookers. Any recs for a fancier one?
