It helped our friend's kid, that's why I posted it. Of course, that family had a lot else going for them, which is how they came to be buddies with a trustee in the first place, but I'm not going to spill someone else's personal details.

It's kind of like the lottery, especially in the lower grades. Luck has as much to do with it as anything else.

Uh, don't be yourself if the "real you" is a PITA parent or helicopter parent or really crunchy or really bland or aggressive or mean. They are looking for families who contribute to the community, not families who are simply boring or who are really annoying. While they may take a few of the latter, you won't be helping your chances if you show up all aggressive about "what can you do for my genius kid, huh?"
