Your original post said you thought it would be an inappropriate mask for him, not his sibling. I wonder if you are using SN sib as a backup excuse here. I have a SN child and an NT child and I know that it can be harmful for the NT child to be told he can't do something other kids get to do because of his SN sib. if it really is an issue (and I think the reaction you are getting is in part because ALL halloween masks van be scary, so why pick out this one?) come up with a work around. Tell him he has to put it on when he leaves the house. Or give the sib the mask to play with so she or he can see its harmless.

OK, the name calling is inappropriate, but I do think OP should take a moment to consider the underlying reaction. This kind of decision will put your DS outside of the norm and is very overprotective. Sometimes we need to push our comfort level to let our kids develop.

Keep in mind that you increase the attraction to something when you make it forbidden, especially if your child doesn't agree that it is harmful. The 7 year old denied the Scream mask may become the 13 year old, wearing the Jason mask on days that it isn't even halloween.

This year DS (7 years old) wants to get the costume from Scream. A friend of his wore it last year. I don't think it's really appropriate for him. Does anyone have any suggestions for a monster type costume that isn't quite so scary. TIA.
