The boundary changes will be announced in Feb. If you want to be heard, you need to speak up now.

They need to figure out what to do with the Carlin Springs choice school (new choice vs. move an existing program) before they make any changes.

But are there any NArl elementary schools that should be avoided, or that can be expected to depress property values?? Or will most of the controversy be about wanting to avoid uprooting elementary schoolers from their current elementary schools/friends??

The boundary changes scheduled to coincide with the new elementary school are very unlikely to affect property values because all the schools in the mix currently have good reputations.

High school boundaries won't change until 2015. This was explained in one of the presentation slides.

Real estate ads even promote Barrett Elementary a very good school, but more diverse and and lower test scores than Taylor for example. I don't think there are any schools in N Arlington that will depress property values.

I'm just speculating, but if a significant number of W-L neighborhoods went to Wakefield and a smaller number of Yorktown neighborhoods went to W-L then the population between the three high schools would balance out and W-L and Yorktown won't be grossly overcrowded as predicted. I think everyone understands that the the high school boundaries will eventually move, because all the elementary kids will be in high school in a few years.

That is interesting -- so they'll just start with creating the one new elementary school. Which existing elementary schools will it draw from? Or which neighborhoods will it draw from?

APS outlined their timeline for buildling capacity and filling the new seats in the next few years. The School Board will be deciding on boundaries for the new Williamsburg ES in the spring. There will be a process for identifying and evaluating options over the fall and winter. During the meeting, they had break-out groups where they asked people what would be a successful process, what would be successful outcomes of the effort, what communications they'd like from APS, and what were their concerns about the process.
