I'd get most of your information about the program from the actual Fairfax County School site. People on this board tend to be out of control regarding the AAP program. Not everyone but the majority who post. There seems to be recent talk of some AAP center being better than others. We are happy with ours but I'm sure some people on this board would having something bad to say.

Welcome to the area!

Remember that it's now referred to by the schools as "AAP" for Advanced Academics Program, and is no longer called "GT." It will be easier to get information if you use the term AAP.

A random Google search will get you all kinds of commentary, when what you want is procedures and facts. I would not start out that way.

Go to the Fairfax County Public Schools web site (an earlier poster gave the web site). And talk to your school office. If the school has a teacher who is the specialist for AAP kids IN the school, that person is the best one to tell you about how the entire AAP process and system work. Children can get some AAP services in their base (neighborhood) schools but it seems what you are talking about is possibly sending your child to an "AAP center" where the classes are all AAP, all the time. The school-level AAP teachers may be somewhat discouraging about the idea of sending your child away from your base school and to an AAP center at another school; schools tend to want to hang onto the kinds of students who qualify for AAP rather than seeing those students leave for centers. But just get the information you need and don't be swayed by opinions, even from teachers.

I believe that you can indeed transfer a child from a private school into FCPS AAP but only if the child qualifies. In fourth grade my daughter got a new classmate who had been only in private school until that point and who came straight into our school's AAP center in public school because she qualified for AAP.

Be aware that children must make certain scores on specific tests in order to qualify for AAP services. FCPS can tell you the details.

Also, be careful when you read about AAP here on this web site or other parent web sites. There are folks on here with personal issues about whether their kids got into AAP centers, and some put some angry posts on here blasting AAP for their own personal reasons. Look for facts, not opinions, and do not listen to rumors from parents who are upset about their own child's experiences. Only YOU can make the decision for your child.

We have just moved from another country to this area. Can anyone please let me know how admission to the "gifted and talented" program work here? We are in a neighborhood where I dont particulary like the lemenmtary school and may make a decision to send my daughter to private school, but if she attends private school can she apply for G&T program in third grade and transfer to a public school with g&T program? or buying a house in a neighborhood with such schools is our only option to send our daughter(if admitted) to a gifted an dtalented program?

Thank you
