And your children are second class citizens in your world. No thanks.

Why? Because they are home alone 5 hours a week?

DH and I met with our financial advisor and ran all the numbers in terms of its impact on us both short-term and long-term retirement. All other things being equal, we'll be fine. Company was supportive of 80% and will return me to 100% if/when I want to.

I should add that I think it helps if you are in an office where lots of people are doing flextime, telework, and so on. I'm the only one part-time but since it's not uncommon to see an empty desk because people work 4 10hr days or telework once a week, my absence once a week isn't unusual.

Some companies will look over a PTer even knowing that person is seeking FT. Depends on the culture. I think a good way to find out is whether they offer any benefits to PTers, even metro or transportation benefits could give some insight.

10:49 here, and I would. This extra day with my child is priceless.

If your company wouldn't guarantee you a FT job when you wanted it, would you still think it was worth it?

I work 28 hours, or 70%. Benefits are prorated. I can mostly set my own schedule, which ideally is 8,6,8,6, Fridays off.

More often i need to work half days on Fridays, so I spread it out or just work extra.

The awesome thing is if I work more that 28 hours, I get paid up to 40, so I don't mind working extra (though I don't get extra vacation time or extra in the 401k).

I don't like my work, but I do value the flexibility. I think I'm going to apply for a 20 hour a week job I just saw posted. Money would be less, but it might be a better fit.

4 days, 20 hours, 9:30-3. When I interviewed for this job I asked if I could actually accomplish it in 20 hours and the answer was "not at first, but after you get the swing of things, definitely." Boss was right.

My office does not allow me remote access to my email and they flat out said they can't afford to pay me more so I'm not supposed to work extra hours. I don't. And frankly I don't need to b/c the workload is easily manageable. There are 2 other part-timers here but they were originally FT who went part-time b/c the office didn't want to lose them. So I'd say I lucked out in terms of respect given to a real part-time job.

Do I worry about not contributing to retirement? Yes. But this is the decision DH and I have made b/c we have a young kid.

I love that I still work in my field, maintain all the contacts I had in it outside my office, and still have a lot of extra time. Just wish I didn't need to sleep as much. Then I'd get a lot more done.

Usually work 25 hours a week but there is always a lot of work so I could work more if I wanted to and some weeks work less. I love that I can get the kids on the bus, work and then be home to meet the PM bus. I can attend all during school activities and volunteer as needed. My benefits were cut to 50%, but I still get 50% paid holidays, 2 weeks vacation and can contribute to my 401(k). My schedule mirrors the school calendar so I'm off today, get a spring break, etc. I think I do work more hours since I return emails/calls as needed, but for the flexibility it is worth it.

I used to work part-time at past jobs. Loved it, but convinced myself that I needed FT pay. Looking back, I prefer part-time. I've reached a point where I want to be home when my kids get home, rather than 2 -3 hours later. Not to mention that when I do get home, it's so rushed and all I want is an hour to decompress and do nothing.

With that said, I'm not interested in a full day off. Would prefer 5-6 hours a day/5 days a week.

I worked four days a week when the kids were younger and enjoyed it but was definitely ready to go back FT. Better pay, don't have to worry about having to catch up or be on call on my day off etc.

So for me right now no desire to be PT but that could change.

32 Hours. Wednesday off - I'm sitting on my couch right now. It is great to have a day to myself. No kids, can go for a quiet walk if I want, run any errands that need to be run at my own pace.

Does not impact my retirement or health insurance (DH provides coverage. I get paid for 32 hours and and on average work 32 hours. I'm willing to switch days off if necessary and possible.
