For four years, we have been debating the issue of tax fairness. Who pays taxes, who doesn't? Do wealthy people pay their fair share? Do poor people do enough? If we need to increase taxes, is it fair to do so to the wealthiest members of society? What is the effective tax rate of the rich vs. the midddle class. Is Obama engaging in class warfare? Is Romney a privileged elite with a world of options designed to minimize taxes for people like him?
This isn't something a few campaign operatives conjured up. This is the conversation our country is having and has been having for some time.
In a race where tax fairness is an issue, it matters greatly whether the candidate is a former tax cheat. If it is true, it would sink him. And not for unfair reasons.
