Our school the reading teacher is still going through all of the K students to see which ones are at a certain level. But even if a child doesn't have a strong reading skill now they could end up being stronger at reading at the end of the year than a child who started to read before they were 5.

It's so early, not every kids is reading. My older daughter (now in third grade) was reading chapter books when she entered kindergarten, whereas my younger daughter (who has just started k) just about knows her A, B, Cs. The teacher will get it all figured out and group them appropriately

Kindergarten teacher here--October is the earliest. September is all about assessments and learning routines and procedures. It is absolutely critical that our class is a community that understands the expectations and routines. When the groups start, you want your ds to have his teacher's full attention. If she doesn't spend this time setting the routines in place, she be constantly interrupted during your son's reading group time. We "go slow now to go fast later."

We're in the same predicament, our DS is reading in K. His Pre-K teacher told us to have 1st grade workbooks on hand, and he reads plenty of books at night. His school has "Book in a Bag", in which a canvas bag with a book is placed in his backpack every night. I have him read it to us, vs. us reading it to him. Keep him challenged at home, that's really all you can do.

Relax! It won't affect his chances of getting into Harvard.
It sounds like your child is not unhappy. I'm sure he's reading at home, so he'll be fine until they can assess everyone and figure out the groups.

probably half the class is going to school for the first time, so they have to catch them up.
what are you antsy about? you don't have to sit in the classroom. i'm sure your child is fine and happy.

We've finished week three. When is reasonable to expect reading groups, etc. I am starting to get antsy. They are working on letter sounds and singing the abc song. DS comes home with a lot of coloring and doodling in his backpack. He can read very well, and I know there is more to kinder, but I feel like they did more in pre-k.
