In DC's AAP class there are 30 kids. 6 are white. The rest are Asian.

Sorry I can't break this down further between East Asian, South Asian, North Asian, West Asian - since this seems to be important to some people.

We are looking to buy a home in the Virginia suburbs, but don't want to move very far out. When I look at school demographics, many schools have a significant Asian population, but I imagine this mostly means a large East Asian population. I know it really shouldn't matter, and it probably doesn't, since this area is quite diverse. I grew up looking very different from anyone else in my school, and I just don't want the same for my girls.

We live in a different world now. I experienced the same thing. Being the only person who looked like me. It actually taught me many things, dealing with some bullying, learning the art of making new friends. It was a good experience for me. But I know what you mean. The reality of today's world, however, is that if you pick any DC suburb, you will find an incredible divesity of kids, and as pp noted, whites are fast becoming the minority at most of these schools.

Said the white person who's never been a minority!

OP said 'look the same', but she probably meant those who have a similar cultural background. South Asians can look very very different from each other.

No, those groups are Southeast Asian, not South Asian. It's a well-defined term, not a vague one.

How exactly is South Asian a vague term? Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan - there are plenty of groups that consider themselves to be South Asian. Maybe the OP would be happy to find a community with any or all of them.

I think that's exactly the question...is there a specific group the OP is looking for because there could be pockets of different groups in different areas. Do Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian, and others count?

Indian here, we're in Town of Vienna- great schools, great community. There are not a ton of S. Asians, a la Loudoun County, but a decent number nonetheless. I know how you feel about wanting at least some kids around the school that are of same descent. I had a similar experience as you. And to the PP, South Asian is a common term and not vague.

OP here. Yes, we are Indian, but I would be happy to find any South Asian community...the cultures are very similar. South Asian is a very commonly-used term.

I'd say Vienna and Falls Church.

Marshall in Fairfax County has a fairly large amount of South Asians.

I know Loudoun County and the parts of Fairfax that are close to Loudoun have signifiant South Asian populations. Do any closer-in suburbs in VA? I would love to hear about specific high school districts that do have a decent South Asian population.
