Years ago, someone would hang a sign that said "Irish need not apply". Today, the thought that someone would look sideways at a co-worker of Irish heritage is absurd. Can you imagine someone passing over a person because their great grandfather was from Galway, or toss a resume in a trash can?
When the notion is equally absurd as applied to Lesbians or Native Americans, then the problem is solved and "Awareness" days will go away. But clearly we are waaaay far away from that point.

There are so many other concerns to think about. If these celebrations bother you, ignore them. No one cares about your not like this now.

The South Park episode on Conjointed Twin Myslexia Awareness Week nailed this nearly 15 years ago, and it still holds true today.

I work for a government agency that has monthly awareness topics. Hispanic Awareness Month. African American Awareness. Women. GLBT. Native American. They are always explained as necessary to draw awareness to the contributions of "traditionally under-represented groups".
Without criticizing the value of them, I'm curious as to whether anyone thinks the need for such things will ever go away? At what point is the workforce "aware" and therefore these are unnecessary?
