I am the PP who said we never did them. We didn't do it because they are "institutional employees" or because we don't live IB. We did it because that is what was easiest for our family and our children. The school provided an option, home vitit or in school visit -- we chose in school since I wanted my children to see their classroom prior to going to school.

My daughter ADORES her teachers, and I am thrilled. SHE will be thrilled to show them her favorite toys and introduce them to the cat. Whatever they think is appropriate for their pedagogy is fine by me.

You sound like an unspeakable snob, and I hope you don't let on to the teachers that you think them so beneath you. And if you can't control your superiority, I hope they're good enough teachers not to take it out on your kid.

It's only a big deal if you don't live in DC or you have hoarding issues and keep a filthy house. Our charter makes parents sign a document agreeing to home visits to confirm residency. So what's your problem?

I have to agree. Not wanting to let the teacher into your house and refering to your child's teacher as an "institutional employee" makes me wonder why you feel comfortable leaving your most precious hold with him/her all day.

Just clean up and be gracious. Your kid will love it.

Other than being a little stressed about having to make sure the house is clean, I don't think it's a big deal at all. This is someone I'm allowing into my child's mind and heart for a year. That's a way bigger deal to me than letting them into the house.

ITA. DC loved having his teachers over. He has an IEP so all 3 of his teachers came over. It was only for 1/2 hr and he didn't want them to leave!

What's the big deal? I thought it was nice and gave my daughter a chance to meet the teachers in a space she was comfortable with.

I have no experience with home visits, is this for a preschooler? From reading these boards, it seems that one of the purposes is engagement with the student's family to better serve the child and another is confirming residency.

Anyone out there in DCUM who has opted out of the home visit, or arranged to have the visit out of their home? I'm not clear why my home needs to be invaded/inspected by an institutional employee.
