OP here - thanks all. Will be trying both the Magic Eraser and the SOS pad.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser sponges. Works like a charm and doesn't scratch. Just make sure that you wipe it off with a wet rag when you are done.

Actually, the blue soap in the SOS pads is great. You can wet down an SOS pad, squeeze the soapy paste onto a nylon scrubby and clean with it. It's not as good without the abrasive steel wool, but should take those marks off.

So we tried bar keepers friend and unless we use something like steel wool the grime isn't coming off ... Is that the solution? Use steel wool?

We bought a stainless steel stove last year. Despite wiping it down as directed, we have managed to get this dark, grimy, cooked on stains on the stove top around the burners that are seemingly impossible to scrub off (unless we use steel wool which would likely scratch the stove top pretty badly).

Anyone else encounter this? How did you clean it off? And more importantly, how do you prevent it? DH and I are good about wiping down our stove after use, but these still build up.
