Wow. DC goes to K next year and I surely do not have 27+ days off work. Damm.

Really? I have seen a fair humber of complaints from SAHMs that the schools are caving in to the demands of WOHPs by providing all-day kindergarten.

Also, if you add IEP meetings to the mix or any special ed services your child gets through the county, those meeting times are not at 7 or 8 am or 5:30pm. I am not complaining (anymore that is) as I learned to adjust and changed my work hours so that I could accomodate these important meetings.

Or maybe that kindergartners can really handle all day kindergarten. And get us competitive in the world. Ffx county just did this but other counties in the region have been doing it for years, successfully.

I underestimated what my children could do when they entered kindergarten.

OP = Welcome to school where working parents come last! I learned early on that the school does not accomodate dual working parents well when it comes to meetings, days off, etc.

So to address what to do with your kids -there are several camps that offer workshops during some of those days off. Lola's Lab is one that comes to mind (it's an art camp). I also recall that camp flyers start coming out about a few weeks before the holiday or teacher work day.

Good luck!

Not all schools have early release every week. At ours it's more like once a month. Second the camp option. School schedules aren't drawn up for the convenience of parents; I'd just thank the stars for extended day and start researching childcare options for school closures. Good luck!

I'm not sure why you have quotation marks around grade preparation, but if you cannot be respectful of the teachers, you have a long 13 years ahead of you.

i have immense respect for teachers but don't understand why elementary school teachers need two full days (without students) twice a year to do grade preparation.

thanks for the information on options.

They hold the parent-teacher conferences those days. 20-25 kids per class...each family gets a slot...it goes two days back-to-back. There is maybe only two single days the entire year for grade prep.

23:15 It's not just about preparing grades. Teachers meet to do long-range planning and data analysis.

OP-the school calendar has been public since early spring. You knew your child was going to school. And you're just getting around to looking at the calendar this week?

Arlington report cards aren't just grades; they come with paragraphs from all your kid's teachers talking in detail about how the year is going. Multiply by 18-24. That's why the two days.

There's nothing unusual about this calendar. It's the same at schools pretty much everywhere in this region. We actually have far more days in school than places like Texas.

FWIW, most governments take off for Columbus Day, Presidents Day, etc.

Quit your bitching and suck it up.

My kid just started K in Arlington and I just looked at the school calendar for the year. Holy cow -- the schools are closed a lot! Three days in October, five in November, six in December, four in January, one in February, seven in March, one each in April and May. PLUS early release every Wednesday and it looks like eight more random early release days. Seriously? Am I reading it right? Extended day helps with early release, but what in the world do you do if you need to work on Columbus Day, Veterans Day, MLK and Presidents Day, not to mention all the teacher work days and the days they need for "grade preparation"?
