Wheaton Park. The Georgia avenue side has the miniature train and the old fashioned carousel. The other side has Brookside Gardens, with formal gardens, ponds, lots of space for running, and a really fantastic butterfly house. I live in DC and we go out to Wheaton several times a year for these two.

In DC itself, the little kids love the Botanical Gardens next to the Capitol. And the tunnel between the East and West wings of the National Gallery. There's the Cascade Cafe, a tunnel full of lights, and one of the better museum gift shops, when it comes to kid stuff.

And yes, the zoo, but I avoid it on weekends. If you can go on a weekday, do that.

Natural history Museum, sculpture garden, and carousel ride on the mall. Boat ride on the Potomac, either from Georgetown or from old town. All fired up is very fun although sometimes they need a few days to put the pottery in the kiln; you may like to call them.

My BFF from high school is coming to visit and bringing her 3-year-old, whom I love. It's close to her (DD's) birthday, so I want to take them out to do something fun as a treat.

I'm not sure what to suggest for activities, though, since I don't have any kids. Daughter loves arts and crafts, so I was wondering if there was anything we could do like paint-your-own pottery, but where they could take the thing with them that day ... they're not local.

But I'm open to anything. We're starting out from Bethesda.
