Again, look at the demographics. I lived and went to school in Syracuse for awhile, a city which has a high concentration of Jews. It's to be expected that the schools would be closed to accommodate them, as well as the Christian holidays.

Oh please - there are no days off for passover, it's not even a holiday that requires days off if you are jewish. There is a 4 day spring break, plus Good Friday and Easter Monday. The 4 day break is always the M-Th before Good Friday. Some years spring break may coincide with passover, but not always.
At our JCC, they are closed for the first two days and last two days of Passover. This is in addition to the Spring Break week in which the Preschool is off but there is child care.
Oh, I thought this thread was about MCPS, which is not closed for passover (although in some years it could be). That's what I was answering.

I remember going to Jewish parochial school and not having a full week of school for 6 weeks or so.

Short answer is it would be too difficult to find/cost too much money to pay for the number of subs required while Jewish staff members took leave to observe their holidays. It is much less expensive to close school.

20-30 years ago, when I was in MCPS, it was frankly pretty jewish, so it accomodated those students. I remember singing hannukah songs too, etc. I enjoyed the days off (although I'm guessing my mother did not).

There may be long threads in the archives on this topic, but the short, sweet, easy answer is this: Take a quick look at the demographics of MC and it will instantly become clear why MCPS are closed for both Jewish and Christian holidays.
