Arlington is always rezoning. Every single year they talk about it. Sometimes they move a few kids.

APS is not always rezoning. Except for a few neighborhoods near Glebe in 2008, last major changes were like twenty years ago.

There won't be any boundary changes until new schools are built or additions are built to existing ones. McKinley, Ashlawn, Nottingham, Tuckahoe, and Jamestown would likely be affected by boundary changes in the next few years because of the planned addition to Ashlawn and a new school at Williamsburg.

None of this affects ASF/Key, unless APS decides to revisit reopening Madison which could affect Taylor. But this is just wild speculation and probably 5 years from now. Also, current students would not be forced to relocate if students are rezoned. That has been county policy for decades.

So the OP is safe. Her school is ASF.

but what if OP got zoned out of Key/ASFS to, say, Long Branch? that boundary is likely to change as the next one. nothing is guaranteed unless its on the same block of the school i guess.

That's wrong. APS cannot force families to enroll their kids in a Spanish immersion program. The Key and ASF boundary is the same--it includes the eastern part of Lyon Village, Courthouse and Rosslyn. The OP's neighborhood school is Science Focus (is she doesn't want Spanish Immersion).

APS can't -- or shouldn't -- force parents to put their kids in an immersion program, but there's no reason the alternative should be another special program, such as ASFS.

You may disagree with the logic, but that's the way it's been since Science Focus opened. It is a neighborhood school and a team school.

The Key district IS the Science Focus district.

Me neither. Jamestown, etc. has just as much "right" to Science Focus as Key.

This is not Alexandria where overcrowded neighborhood schools don't admit in-boundary students.

The neighborhood boundary for Key is also the neighborhood boundary for Science Focus. So the OP, who lives in the Key/SF zone is safe even if SF is not taking transfers from other schools within the team like Jamestown and Taylor. Any future rezoning of any school in the county would not apply to current students of that school.

I would think all bets are off and rezoning is coming.

You can probable deduce with some certainty, for example, who will be zoned for the new Williamsburg ES.

At Jamestown, K enrollment is lower than expected b/c parents don't want to get their kids started and forced to move into another.

I would think that given the crowding issues I do think you have to consider the possibility that these "automatic" spots you take for granted may go away. SF is full, and while my kid at Jamestown could "automatically" get into SF, she actually cannot.

No talks yet, just rumors of future talks. You have nothing to worry about. Your place at SF is safe.

I have heard there may be some re-zoning of Arlington schools. We are currently in the Key district, which automatically gets my child a spot at SF, which was partly why I purchased in this location. Could someone please clarify what is going on with the rezoning talks? My child will start K next Fall (2013). Thank you
