First haircut at about 2. After that, I send him to the barber when he tells me he wants it cut, he tells the barber what to do. He is 6 now. He didn't like the last cut, and has resolved to tell the barber to do something differently next time.

6y for both boys. They wanted their hair cut really short.

My son was age 4 as well, but not about something as different as a mohawk, for example. He really always wanted his hair shorter than I would have liked. At least for now, if it comports with the school dress/grooming code, it's fine with me.

Twin boys 7 1/2 --- one of them needed a "faux hawk" hair style to go back to school. I told him it was okay so took him to the Hair Cuttery he sat in a chair for 45 minutes while the stylist fixed his hair. He's very happy with it and for $12, I couldn't be happier! It looks good and it makes him feel good, so why not!

As soon as they want. My 12 year old is very conservative. I talked him into getting a mohawk last year at the beginnig of his soccer season. lol

My 8 year old wanted my husband to shave an arrow on the side of his head as his back to school haircut last year so he did.

I can't remember when he didn't have an opinion about his hair. He likes it long, and we generally let it go until it gets annoying, cut it off and start over. That's what he wants. It is only hair, so that's what he gets.

Also as soon as they had an opinion. My youngest was pretty young - like less than two. The older ones really cared by about first grade. FWIW, if mine wanted something way out there (and there have been times I wasn't fond of what they chose), I'd let them. It takes a pretty confident person to pull off having initials or what not shaved into your hair. Since there are no rules about hair and school, that's not an issue for us.

For our boys, they expressed opinions about hair during their fourth year. The girls - one at 3, one at 6. I say yes to everything except shaving.

Absolutely by 8, for both boys. My only rules are that anything they choose which is way out there (e.g., shaving initials into the hair) must be grown out before important family events, and must be appropriate for school.

My DS is almost 8. Recently he told me he hates the way I get his hair cut. He wants the front longer so he can push it over to the side. He has become very vocal about wanting his hair a certain way. I have no issues allowing him freedom of expression with his hair, I just didn't see this coming so early.
