What I would do: Just relax for right now. Don't expect the worst. You can supplement as needed along the way. You'll see homework coming home that will give you hints as to what they are learning. You can check out their books and all that as well.
Even with the "worst" (and that is completely subjective...your experience might be totally different!) teacher, your kid will be okay

Maryland teachers are held to very high standards...they have to be, because of the testing they do.
Easy stuff you can do: Sight words (look up the first grade lists), reading to your dc every day for at least 10 minutes, using supplements like Starfall.com, and staying on top of what the teacher is teaching to make sure your little one isn't falling through the cracks with his understanding.
