I lived in Florida for ten years. The Cubans in Florida do not look upon themselves as the typical immigrant. They also do not view themselves as other Latinos, but better.

I think there are also class differences between many Cuban immigrants and Latino immigrants from many other countries and that is a major factor.

Nevertheless, he gave a pretty good speech last night I thought and I still don't get why he isn't the VP pick. I think he wouldn't have the baggage of Ryan and he would appeal more to independents and he's from Florida, for gosh sakes!

Then again, I would never vote for Romney regardless of his VP pick so what do I know?

I thought hat Rubio gave a very impassioned speech about his experience growing up in an immigrant family. And it resonated with the audience at the convention.

Test despite this love of immigrant values, the party fails to attract the immigrant American, and by that I mean actual citizens. Sure, they get string support from the Cubans, but that seems largely based on (1) anti communism and (2) that Cubans ave the unique right to stay in the us if they can swim ashore. In other words the path to us residency is identical to every illegal here except that they are singled out as a favored people.

If Republicans want to promote immigrant values, they must find a way to make peace with them, for the sake of their party and for our country, which depends upon the drive of immigrants in order to be great. Clearly republicans understand this but they need to do soul searching.
