Thanks for the link OP, this is actually really interesting. So much of the hype surrounding college admissions is about the 1% of kids who are stellar in every way and want to go to similarly prestigious (and expensive as hell) schools. That's not for everyone. College rankings for the rest of us.

Did you guys read what they were ranking? It was pretty up front that it's not a ranking based on academics or career opportunities.

The Washington Monthly rankings are based on three factors. The first is social mobility, which gives colleges credit for enrolling many low-income students and helping them earn degrees. The second recognizes research production, particularly at schools whose undergraduates go on to earn PhDs. Third, we value a commitment to service. The more expensive college becomes, the more students are encouraged to see higher education as a mere return on investment. The students in our best colleges are taught by example and design to look beyond themselves and give back.

And because the cost of higher education has become so crucial, we have added a new factor to our college rankings this year. The social mobility measure that rewards colleges with better-than-expected graduation rates has been improved to account for college prices.

Sorry that should have been Tugaloo in the top 20. I was laughing so hard I pressed the wrong key.

This ranking is hilarious. It ranked my daughter's safety schools, the schools where she was offered tons of unsolicited merit aid, way above the school she attends. Tugaloo? In the top 10? Ha,ha,ha,ha,ha

Aw, this is cute. I still think Harvard is going to get you better career opportunities than UC San Diego, but hey, I applaud someone trying to break the lock of US News.

A different kind of college rankings. Particularly interesting - top 20 of USN&WR rankings are private institutions. This set of rankings from Washington Monthly includes 13 public institutions in the top 20
