The company that does the advertisements on DCUM is great. I'm reading this thread and looking at a picture of a gorgeous woman in a gorgeous sari. Now I want to go to an Indian Wedding!

yeah

big difference

kurta?

burqa?

Moron. Two completely different things. It doesn't matter if it's a hindu or muslim wedding, people wear very similar things (although in my experience, muslim weddings are a little more casual and women wear salvar kameez, but i've never seen anyone wear a salvar kameez/punjabi dress to a hindu wedding, saris or lehngas only).

Actually you are the moron. People wear punjabi shalwar kameez to Hindu weddings all the time. The key is how formal it is vs. casual. And Yes I am Indian.

Did you see the part where PP said "in her experience", I don't think that makes her a moron. You're the one who doesn't know the dif btw a kurta and burqa, haha!!

DH is Indian and I have lots of saris. For one of our friend's wedding I let all her friends come and pick a sari from my "collection" so they didn't have to spend money on something they'll never wear again.

Do you know any friends of the groom or bride?

Kurta is way too casual for a wedding, IMO. Wear sari, a designer/dressy salwar khameez maybe, or something Western that you'd wear to a wedding.

It's a silk wedding.

Anonymous wrote:OP are you Indian? If so, wearing Western will look weird and go buy a sari from one of the shops in Rockville or College Park. If not, then just wear a colorful cocktail dress and you'll be just fine. Kurta to mehndi sounds good.

OR you could ask the bride or another Indian friend to take you shopping for a sari. I had several non-Indian friends who wore saris to my wedding and they looked great!! Another friend and her mom helped them get dressed before the wedding.

I'm guessing the OP is not Indian, or she probably wouldn't be asking the question. And I don't think just being Indian mandates you have to wear Indian clothes. Anything that's formal enough for the occasion will be fine.

I think a kurta is too casual. It would be better to wear a regular dress that you'd wear to a Western wedding than a casual Indian outfit.

Ask the Bride what appropriate attire would include.

We are invited to an Indian wedding. I happen to have a kurta from a visit to India some years ago. Is it okay to wear this to the wedding? Or is it too casual and should I wear a western style dress to the wedding instead? In this case I could wear the kurta to the mendi the night before. Thanks!
