Subject: Katrina v. 2.0?
The Palm Beach area got pounded by Isaac as only a low
Cat 1. Last update from a friend was almost 15 inches of rain. That can do some serious damage. Like pp stated, it can be a lower Category but do immense damage if it's a slow mover.
Moral of the story - it might not be Katrina v2, but don't underestimate it.

Category is not an absolute measure of damage. If a storm parks itself over a city, all bets are off. If it runs up a bay all bets are off.

Lots of grocery store runs! Most grocery stores are running out of water and bread...And a lot of gas stations are out of gas. The places that do have them have long lines.

The problem with Katrina wasn't the strength of the winds so much as it's sheer size and the overwhelming amount of rain. Isaac is shaping up to be a much smaller storm. The conditions in the Gulf are also different than they were for Katrina, so Isaac is not expected to pick up as much strength.

True, but by the time Katrina made it it's second landfall I believe it was a Cat 3. If it hits during high tide, wherever it goes- will probably wreak havoc in storm surge damage. I think people have vivid memories of the last "big one" and will prepare if not over-prepare accordingly. At least, I hope...

I think that it is mostly people freaking out because of how bad Katrina was. But then again Katrina didn't hit Louisiana head on and it was a lot worse in Mississippi than Louisiana.I am like 15 minutes away from New Orleans, and we are staying here for the storm!

It's still supposed to only be a Cat 2 (100knot sustained winds) when is comes ashore in Louisiana. Katrina was a Cat 5. Yes the storm surge will do some damage, but it wasn't the hurricane winds that did mot of the dmamage in New Orleans but the levees crapping out the next day.

Katrina was only a Cat 1 when it made landfall in S. Florida. It picked up steam when it crossed the Gulf of Mexico. Isaac is expected to do the same thing.

No, it's going further east and it's not as big a storm, plus they've reinforced the levees, which was what caused the big issue. If the levees hadn't broken/overtopped, Katrina would not have been the tragedy it was.
