If I have a small basket around, I'll take it, fill it with assorted samplers of tea or coffee and maybe get a small sleep of biscuits, put them all in the basket and put a bow on it. The hostess can opt to boil a pot of water and offer the tea and biscuits after dinner or keep them for her own enjoyment later (or regift). You can also find suitable baskets at dollar stores now, too.

Wine, beeswax or soy candles (not heavily scented).

Instead of flowers, an orchid in a simple pot. I buy small, unusual ones from hobbyists at the orchid show. They cost less than decent fresh flowers, no vase issue, and they're not the big white phalaenopsis everyone gets. If she appreciates them it's something new and if she doesn't it's something inoffensive she can regift.

Wine or a nice candle with holder? I guess the candle would have to be in a gift bag.

If you bring flowers, make it small/ medium arrangement in a vase so the hostess can place it immediately without fuss.

A box of designer chocolates. They look beautiful and if the hosts don't want to eat them, they can just put them out for the guests to enjoy.

You can always regift wine at some dinner you go to in the future. I find flowers are nice but a pain to deal with if I'm busy prepping dinner, greeting other guests, getting people drinks, and so on.

I'd bring flowers over wine to someone I didn't know. What if they don't drink?

I wouldn't bring flowers, since the hostess will have to find a vase, trim the flowers, etc.! ans she may be busy. I also wouldn't bring a dessert if someone wasn't expecting it. But chocolates or wine are nice.

Bottle of $15 or so wine, bouquet of flowers, desserts - any one of those is good.
