I think everyone agrees that the field trip was ridiculous and just awful awful judgement. No one is laughing at slavery. We are cracking up at the way he told the story of the field trip, because he was friggin hilarious. The joke is not on slaves-- it's on the clueless people who thought it would be a great educational experience to take little black kids out to pick cotton. PP, there are PLENTY of Jewish comics who make fun of the "past ills" his people experienced. That's what good comedy is all about-- taking something outrageous and making you laugh while making you think.

Do you think they went to the fields and some of the kids either ran over and picked some cotton or begged to be allowed to pick some. And the narrator stuck some of it in his back pocket. Then when he got home and his mom asked about it, he told her about the field trip without all the details. And the mom misunderstood what really happened and got all mad and went down to the school.

I sent it off to three black friends who thought it was funny - disgusting, yes, but also funny.

There are places that are still backwoods, PP. sad, but true

But I give the kid credit for making the teacher and school like like complete assholes!

THAT said, the fact that no one at the school thought it might be wrong to take a class full of black children on a trip to work in the cotton fields doesn't surprise me, especially considering this happened in Alabama. WTH. They could have simply toured the plant and fields. There was NO reason to have them out in the fields like little slaves.

Hilarious! Almost reminds me of Alice Waters' edible school in CA where all the Latino kids grow and pick fruits and veggies at school. My white yuppie foodie friends think this is just wonderful.
