I was really nervous, but I calld a friend and put her on speaker phone, iced while I was mixing, swabbed with alcohol, held my brath and stuck it in (I did not feel the 28 gauge needle at all), injected, and continued to ice for a few more minutes. It was actually easier than the subcutaneous shots...though I had some soreness afterward.
If you're really nervous, your clinic may be able to help you find a nurse who administers injections as a side business. I used one for my first cycle, but didn't have time to arrange it for my second.
+1. I gave myself many, many IM injections (PIO, trigger, etc.) in the buttocks, upper/outer quadrant like PP says, but no ice necessary. For me, twisting around a bit was easier than doing it in the thigh. I watched a video on youtube that showed a woman doing it.
