Not a Chesterbrook parent, but the PTAs actually do "raise" all the money and then use it towards programs at the schools. All of the money is spent on programs for the schools. So while I don't understand the $500,000, $300,000 would have been pretty accurate. All that money may not just be going to help the actual school day though. There are a lot of evening, afterschool, and summer programs that the school raises money for.

It would be interesting to see the financial statements to see a credit of $500k each year. What is the PTA selling...drugs?

So where's the "over $500K raised annually" for the school?

The 2010/11 balance sheet shows actual income of $294K minus total expenses of $236K with a profit of $58K.

I don't see $500k "raised annually."

Is this how Chesterbrook does math?

The PTA is incredible, raising over 500K annually for the school (the PTA financial statements are available on the PTA website). All of the PTA money goes back into Chesterbrook, although PTA funds are not permitted to be used for additional teachers. The principal is fantastic and well-liked by the teachers. The school has an excellent Level IV program, and we opted to keep our oldest kid at Chesterbrook rather than send him to Haycock b/c we were so impressed with the program and the school. The only negative would be that in the upper grades class sizes increase. My oldest has had a class size of about 28 kids for 3 yrs, although math class has had as few as 21 kids.

Didn't you post the same thing on the Haycock thread?
The OP is asking about Chesterbrook...not Arlington County.

A lot of that money is for afterschool programs and summer camps.

Really, why not just send your kids to private school when the PTA needs to raise a $500K each year at a public school?

For what it's worth, Northern Virginia Magazine came out with a list of top 25 elementary schools in NoVa, and all the McLean ES's were listed.....Spring Hill, Chesterbrook, Kent Gardens, Franklin Sherman, Churchill Road, and Haycock.

+1. I would agree that they are among the best schools in the county, but there are several other schools, some of which have been the subject of recent threads here, that would also have to be included in any discussion of the best schools in the county.
