We go to the Jhoon Rhee in Arlington and I can second the quality of the program. We started when my son was five and a half. (he is eight and a half now) At the first class they were having the kids stand on one foot and my son, literally COULD NOT DO THIS. We've been there for three years now. It's been a huge commitment, but no where along the road did I really think it was too difficult to stick with. My kid absolutely loved it for the first two years. His dedication seems to be waning a bit, but, I think it is a fantastic therapy for my ADD, sensory challenged, slightly anxious son. The instructors are all quite good. The ones that teach the little guys (the knee-hi ninjas) are superb. They have just the right tone and the kids love them. Arlington Jhoon Rhee has an adaptive class and adaptive instructors as well.

Jhoon Rhee in Falls Church (shopping center at corner of 7 and shreve) is great. My ASD son has been going for 7 months it's the only activity he's been very upbeat and excited about. I think the instructors are great. Each class has 4 instructors and they get tons of individual attention help. They hold all kids to behavior standards which is really good. My son's OT has noticed much faster improvement in his core strength and focus. (He also has hypotonia). Highly recommend.

He had a few bumps in road...but the staff was so open when I shared his issues and really encourages him and the kids get tons of positive reinforcement. Can't say enough good stuff about them!

Another rec for Flying Kick...especially Shane or Master A. They are amazing with kids with different needs...very good at 'reading' what each kid needs in terms of how much and what kind of discipline, structure, flexibility, humor, etc. and don't take a one size fits all approach. However, they are NOT cheap. Bethesda rents and all, I suppose, but they are worth it, IMO.

Hands down - Black Belt Martial Arts Center in Kensington. The instructors are terrific and strike a great balance between extra support where necessary, and maintaining the same expectations for all kids - the kids have a lot of self esteem as a result. it is also a very friendly, community oriented place.

Second Flying Kick. Call before you go to be sure Shane or Master AlAtrash will be teaching.

I suggest Juijitsu since most of the "grappling" is done on the floor.

In Rockville there is http://www.grappling.com/.

My kids have different special needs but I think this helped them with self confidence.

Any recommendations for a good tae kwon do or karate program for my ADHD and very klutzy (dyspraxic) 7 yo? The discipline and activity of classes would be beneficial, I think, but I don't want her to feel too much pressure to progress through the belts.

Thanks!
