My suggestion is plan to get to OBX around 7-8. We did that a few weeks ago and sailed through. You can stop for an early dinner in Williamsburg around 4:30-5pm. Get take out from the Cheese Shoppe and carry it across the street to the lawn of William and Mary. Kids and run around!

What about leaving Friday night and staying at your friend's house overnight. Have dinner/early breakfast with them and get back on the road at 6am. You'll make it to OBX early, but then like others said, you can play and hang out on the beach, have lunch, whatever until your rental is available.

If this were us we'd leave at 4:30 or 5. Last year we did this and had no problems. People who left at 6 or later added at least 3 hours to their trip. I hear this is the norm, as PP's verify.

Yes! You will sit for hours and hours waiting to get over the bridge to Duck. Can you stay over with your friends and finish the drive early Sunday? If not you need ro leave DC before 6 and not stop. I had a thread about traveling to the OBX on a Saturday in the travel forum; go look at some of the responses from that thread.

Because some people work on Fridays. Some people save up for a weeks vacation to the beach and don't want to spend any more money on another hotel. Some people are traveling with babies and toddlers and don't want to deal with finding cribs or bedtime routines in a hotel. Seriously, you can't imagine why it's not so simple for people to just leave a day early?

PP, the traffic getting out of DC on a Friday is also a challenge on I-95.

Best time of year to go to OBX but only IF you have little ones and they are in pre-school or daycare or just with a SAHM/D is the 2nd week of September. We did that for 3 years and got to Duck in 5 hours every time, leaving on a Saturday around 8:00.

why do people travel on Saturdays? Why not go a day early and stay over in Wburg? Sals is an excellent place also.

Yes. You'll sit on the bridge for hours. You need to be in obx by 11 or 12. 6 on a Saturday may be late. Sunday, okay. Saturday, aim for five at the latest.

another person here suggesting you leave super early. In the past, we've left Saturday and it's taken us 10 hours to get down there. Leave before 6 am.

Yup. Especially on a Saturday. Pack a cooler and just go!

We are also driving to OBX on Saturday (see you on the road!) and I cannot stress enough that you need to leave super early. If you are in Williamsburg at lunchtime than you have left way too late and will be sitting in horrific traffic the whole trip. Leave at 6:00 a.m., grab a very quick breakfast on the road, and get to OBX by noon. Then your kids can run around all they want on the beach while you wait to get in your rental.

Williamsburg was my thought also. There are restaurants in town but getting there will take you a 20 minute detour from 64. You could also stop in downtown Norfolk and walk around a bit and have lunch. There is a water front area with restaurants and such.

We are driving from DC to the OBX on Saturday and wondering if anyone had suggestions of a good place to stop with the kids. Mainly looking for a place for lunch or for a 30 minute car break where the kids can stretch their legs. Please send me any suggestions. I was looking at possibly stopping in Williamsburg for lunch if anyone has suggestions for there as well.
