I received advice to buy only short-sleeved since with art and playing the longer sleeves can get totally dirty.

Sounds like a lot. From your list, I'd go with:

7 shirts, all short-sleeved. When the weather cools, you can decide on long-sleeves or just buy a cardigan.
2 skirts
2 dresses
2 pairs of pants

For MV least year we purchased 4 T shirts at the beginning of the school year knowing that if we needed more there was only 1 place to but them - and they never went on sale

Also these were worn by my DD over her clothes. I felt no obligation to having this as a part of her back-up clothes. (and neither did any of the other families).

Uniform exchanges, buying for one season at a time and consider your child's wear and tear on clothing. All is excellent advice.

I think the answer is based on how much laundry you want to do/how often and budget. My ds has a daily uniform and a PE uniform. I bought a weeks worth of clothing.

I agree with PP, look for uniform exchanges!

If the school has a listserve or if you live on the Hill and belong to MOTH, you can post offering to buy hand-me-downs. These are particularly good for cubby items that they don't wear often and may get lost.

My younger kids wear 100% hand-me-down uniforms. For my older son, I bought 5 new polos, 3 pairs of shorts (he has a few of each from last year too). I'm not even thinking long sleeved yet. I buy uniforms at Burlington where tehy have great brands for cheap prices.

Buy only for one season at a time. They'll outgrow things so quickly and you'll see they come to like certain things depending on what everyone else is wearing. For example, a girl may not ever want pants at all. Not all boys like shorts, so all you may need is long pants. For a boy, buy six tops and three bottoms so you can wash it all once a week. For girls, you may need a few extra bottoms to allow some "dressing up" but be sure to have something that wears well in PE (such as pants or skorts).

My son is starting PS3 as well. His uniform is polos and khakis.

I bought 7 shirts in his current size (one for each day of the week, plus one for his backup clothes that will be kept at school and one extra just in case) and 3 shirts in the next size up, in case he has a sudden growth spurt.

I'm aiming for the same number of pants, but haven't bought them all.

I hit a really good sale at The Children's Place at the beginning of the summer, I think I spent $4 per shirt.
