You can't go up in it this year.

Doesn't it re-open in the fall?

We spent a recent weekend in NY, there was so much going on in Central Park - street performers, frisbee, gymnasts etc. we spent an entire day people watching, climbing on rocks etc. there was no shortage of entertainment for our kids. The enterprise shuttle is also on display. I'm not sure I agree about the museums, I'm more in the mindset to take advantage of the free DC than waste $20 going to the Met and spending an hour. We also enjoyed Chinatown and Little Italy. Pick up the most recent New Yorker for ideas.

Our DS doesn't like museums either and I'm tired of paying a lot and then being frustrated when he just wants to rush thru it - neither one of us gets any enjoyment out of it. On the other hand our DS loves buildings and bridges - he loved the empire state building, the brooklyn bridge, the highline(?) any and every playground and central park. He's much happier outside then he is inside. We have exposed him to plenty of museums and they just aren't his thing. Do your kids have special interests? Trains? Boats, ferries? We tend to do things related to their interest and it goes over much better than forcing him into a museum.

If you like museums, I would do some anyway.

I agree. You need to expose kids to museums. You may also be surprised at what they will find interesting.

OP here. Thanks for the suggestions so far! If we were in NYC longer than one day, I might consider doing museums, but since we're only there for so short of a time, I'd hate to "waste" our precious time by dragging a pissed off and bored set of kids around a museum, you know?? I would also hate to spend money on that. We do the museums in DC, but that's different since they're free and if we leave after an hour, it's no biggie.

I think I must have the oddest kids alive b/c my 2 and 4 year olds don't like zoos (well, neither do I), aquariums, and museums. Any suggestions of what to do? Is the Children's Museum of Manhattan a must-see?

Thanks!
