i went thru this last year with my first child entering kindergarten...i wish that all the information they gave me on back to school night, happened the week before that first day of school! On the first day/weeks, I was just wondering what the schedule was like and what they were doing, etc. I would ask my child and he wouldn't give me any details! In the end, it is all just fine, but for us parents who are curious, it would have been good to have!

I think seeing classroom, meeting new friends and families and a basic rundown about routines and schedules is helpful to parents who can then talk to their child about his/her day. It is also helpful to introduce all of this before or as close to the first day as possible. Our generation of parents don't trust and detach like our parents did.
For the parent: feeling like the teacher likes your child. If you have to get bad news (and we all will as some point) at least if it comes from a "good place" it is easier to swallow.

Woahhh, op here, don't want this discussion to go down this road. Point well taken about whether of not it is stressful, be that child or parent, to start kindergarten now days since the majority of children have been in some sort of school for years by then. Some good points made otherwise.

I feel like it was about 100% more stressful to send my daughter to daycare when she was 10 weeks old than it will be to send her to school. She's excited, we're excited, it's a part of life, etc.

It's low key at SACC. I wouldn't do it for the first day though because you want to see your child off at class and drop off supplies, but would start the 2nd day and just go into the SACC room with your child. Our SACC room requires parents to walk in with children anyway.

What part about SACC do you not understand? They'll escort your kids to class in K. Their job is to watch your children, so really no need to worry.

Playdate before the first day is great.
One thing that I feel is missing in what I've got is how the first day will work for SACC. My kid is in morning SACC, but all the information the school has given us has been regarding drop off directly to school.

From what I've heard on the 1st day it can look like the paparazzi have decended upon the school because so many parents come with cameras and video recorders.I have a feeling my kindergartner will be overwhelmed by it all. Not sure if there's a solution though. I'll probably just join in with my camera and hope that having me there the first 10 minutes of school will be comforting.
I agree breakfast or even just coffee with other parents is a nice idea. Information on the upcoming school year is a great idea too. I personally am not interested on info regarding de-stressing or separation anxiety, but perhaps others are. We already dealt with separation anxiety early on in preschool, so if it hits again, I think I know how to handle it.
I have heard a few schools do a practice run riding the bus before school starts. That woulds be nice to build comfort.

Question for parent with kindergarten students coming up. What are your feelings on that first day of school for your kindergarten child? What would you like for YOU on that first day of school that the school could provide in terms of a program for you? Information on the coming year? Information on de- stressing for the coming year? How to deal with separation anxiety? Loved to hear some ideas, suggestions on what would be helpful, or not helpful, for all of us.
