I believe, this, too. I also wouldn't terminate a pregnancy for non-medical reasons at the point where I believed the fetus had gained what I'll call "individual spirit," so I don't think anything happens to it. If I had to terminate for non-medical reasons, I'd believe the same thing I believe about other people dying: their "spirit" remains near us because the atoms that constituted their bodies are recombining all around us and contributing to further life. That may sound cold to people who believe in god or heaven, but it's actually a very comforting and positive vision for me.

I don't believe in souls, plain and simple. When you die, you die, and that's the end of it.

FWIW, I've never had an abortion.

I had an abortion at 19 and personally believe that the fetus's soul has gone on to a spirit world. A friend of mine who had an abortion, but has not yet had children believes that the soul will return again in her future child. This is such a taboo topic, but I imagine that most women who have had abortions have had some thoughts about what happens to their fetus after an abortion.
