If it comes up -- just say that is how your flights worked out. I see nothing wrong with this - you are going out of your way to attend and that is very respectful.

If you weren't that close and others won't find out then I would say it is fine. Just don't post any pics on facebook of the awesome time you had while away for the funeral!

I do not see how this is inappropriate at all.

yep....and if you decide to attend, just do what a PP said and don't mention that you went down early...just show up for the appropriate occasions.

I don't know if I would give it too much thought as long as you didn't make it obvious. (Don't let the kids show up to the funeral with Mickey ears.) But since you asked, yeah maybe it's a little inappropriate.

Umm, close during childhood, not in the last 15 years. But we are close to the rest of the deceased's immediate family. No one would know unless we told them.

Why even mention it to them. Just go. Show up the next day at the appointed hour.

How close were you to the deceased? Would any other attendees have to find out that you were out sightseeing beforehand?

Dh and I do not see eye to eye on this and I'd love some outside input. A family member passed away and we have to fly to the funeral. The funeral location is a major tourist destination. Is it rude to fly down a day before anyone else, visit the tourist destination, and then join everyone else the next day when they arrive? One spouse thinks it is inappropriate and wrong to combine a weekend getaway and funeral. The other thinks we are already dropping close to $1k on this and we may as well take advantage of the location. Vacation time is not an issue, nor is money (the decreased cost of flying in a day early on a Thursday will cover the cost of the extra night's hotel room). Thoughts?
