I stand by the redwood trip. It is an amazing vacation.
My second choice would be San Antonio, then Las Vegas to see Ka.

How much do you have to spend once you get there?
I would fly into either Sacramento or San Jose, and rent a car.
If I had lots of money to spend I would Napa, San Francisco and Monterrey. If I had enough time I would also drive down the Pacific coast hwy to San Simeon and Hearst CastleN and see Big Sur.
If money and time were tight I would do a driving loop. One night in Napa, day trip through Calistoga to see the Old Faithful geyser, and up to Rockefeller Forest. I would get a cabin in one of the small towns along the north central part of the Avenue of Giants and spend a couple of days hiking and relaxing.
