Meant to add that you could also do a daytrip to the beach from Cambridge, Assateague, or drop down Route 13 to Crisfield.

Cambridge is a historic town with a nice river beach playground (it gets hot in summer though), some seafood restaurants and lots of marinas and Victorians on the Choptank.
I'd recommend daytrips to Oxford - visit the playground, the river beach called The Strand, get lunch at the Robert Morris or Schooner's Landing...St. Michaels has the Chesapeake Maritime Museum, boat rides, crab restaurants, and lots of quaint buildings near the waterfront to see and shops.

Agree with this. The Hyatt is definitely not remotely dumpy. It is smaller/quieter than Nemacolin, but very nice and very comfortable. The main draws are the pools, golf, and boat-type activities. We've had a couple of very nice weekends there. I honestly don't know what there is to do in the surrounding area as we did not leave the resort. You can't go wrong with Nemacolin either. It just depends on what you are looking for.

Having stayed at both Chesapeake Hyatt and Nemacolin, I would not describe the Hyatt as "dumpy." I actually thought the room was nicer than our Lodge room at Nemacolin (though we didn't find our room at Nemacolin bad or dumpy either, just a little more tired). At Nemacolin there are tons of different types of places to stay, tons to do, lots of restaurants. The Chesapeake Hyatt is more of a sit around the pool and look at the view sort of place. Two hours is all dependent on travel.

+1. It is about 2 hours from DC and totally geared toward families. They have a "lending library" of toys (good ones) for kids to borrow, one indoor pool and several outdoor pools, a little beach, and a bunch of other activities. Even the regular rooms are spacious and have a fridge and a little area that can be used for bottle/snack prep.

OMG help me. My in-laws want to go somewhere for a weekend in August with the family (8 of us) and my child (the one and only and first grandchild who is 18 months).

Greenbriar and Homestead would be great but we are only going for a weekend, so we need a place that is closer. No more than 2 hours from DC.

One of my friends suggested an Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michaels. I looked at it online and it looks nice...

PLEASE ANY SUGGESTIONS!!!! I need ideas ASAP!
