Would you both be commuting or just your husband? I live in Ashburn and love it. But I SAH and my husband only commutes to Reston. Most people out here commute to Reston/Herndon/Tyson's. I have 2 friends whose husbands commute to DC (and make a ton of money) but they are rarely home before 9.

I can't really picture both parents doing that commute. I agree with the idea of renting, for lots of reasons.

Yes, this is a good idea.

Metro is a joke, it completely unreliable from Arlington to dc, I can't imagine how awful it will be coming and going from farther out.

My friend does the opposite (lives in DC, commutes to Ashburn) and she avoids it as much as possible. She works from home 2-3 days/week, and on the days she's in the office, she leaves at 2pm to beat the traffic, then continues working once she arrives at home. It's a tough commute. Even with the silver line, just the train times (distance involved) means it's likely to take at least an hour door-to-door.

You've already got good schools in Arlington. You might be able to afford more house in Ashburn, but you will never see it or your kids because you will be spending all your time commuting.

Silver Line or no, I would rather rent for the rest of my life in Arlington than buy in Ashburn. (And I'm not one of those hate-all-suburbs posters, either; I live in Vienna.)

That is a terrible commute. Don't do it.

We commuted from Herndon to DC for about 2 years, and it nearly killed us. DH, who swore he'd never leave Virginia, finally gave up after another 90-minute trip (one way) on the Toll Road. We bought a house in DC. Now we've got other problems, but our commute is about 12 minutes each way.

My coworker who commuted from Ashburn to Arlington hated it with a vengeance. He would come in around 10 am and stay late but it still took forever. He ended up finding a job closer to his house. It's a quality of life buster, especially if you have kids. He didn't.

I don't think the Silver Line into Loudoun is anywhere near to a sure thing at this point.
