At my child's school, it was during the school day at a regular time each week. Your teacher will be able to go into more detail.

OP here. one more question: does this take place during the school day or after school?

Yes, some teachers are great, and some not so much. If your kid wants to get into one of the area youth orchestras, you pretty much need a private teacher. If recreational playing and enjoyment are the goals, then the public school lessons will be fine.

I think that depends on the instrumental music teacher at the school (some are amazing) and how much time and effort your child puts towards practicing their instrument.

It's an ok intro but I think to make any progress you need to supplement with outside lessons.

We just moved to the area. I've searched the archives and the MCPS website but am still confused. DD will be in fourth grade in the fall and she already is taking piano lessons. I understand that instrumental music starts in fourth grade, but does that mean all students learn an instrument during the school day, or is it an optional program? And are they private lessons? DD would either have to learn a new instrument, or have lessons geared to her current level on piano, since she isn't a beginner anymore. Could someone please give me a brief summary of how the program works in MCPS? Thanks in advance.
