I don't know. My parents had one built on their house. Their carpenter drew up the plans and built it, and the total cost was about $4000. It's a traditional style, white, with a peaked roof and light fixture. I don't think it required permits but that might depend on where you live.

It's more complicated and more expensive than you think.

You need all kinds of permits, etc. And they can be difficult to come by if your home is historic.

I think it costs our neighbors about $20,000 to build theirs in Alexandria up in George Washington Park (behind the Masonic Temple).

Can anyone recommend a contractor who can rebuild a portico on a 1980s brick colonial in alexandria? Alternatively, does anyone know if any building supply companies make prefab ones? I feel like my handy hubs and I could tackle a project like that, but my searches have come up empty. Experience? Thoughts?
