I live in CCDC and can think of multiple people whose parents probably help them out (though none of them talk about it). I am in the opposite situation where DH and I constantly help out our parents. It is what it is. I don't spend a whole lot of time dwelling on it.

You are just jealous but you don't realize it. You disguise it by saying you are so proud to be independent or whatever else.

I take gifts from my parents because 1) they offer 2) they can afford it. Why would I decline? That would be dumb. "I am so proud, I will turn down this down payment and save for 20 years myself. I hope inflation doesn't hit". Ummm no. "Trips for my kids?!? Absolutely not!!"

But I also don't discuss it with nosy little twits who have nothing better to do than to count my funds.

I don't think people have an issue with this. People have an issue with adults taking large "gifts" or "early inheritance" from their parents in order to live a lifestyle they cannot afford.

Wow, you are a bitter, bitter person. Why not be happy for someone who receives a gift such as this?

Listen PP, I DONT GIVE A SH*T! I am answering the question. I don't care if you borrow money, run a drug ring to finance your kids' Sidwell education. I don't care. It is boring.

If you amassed wealth and knew it would be taken largely in estate taxes, you would be looking for ways to transfer the money now before you die too.

They do it because they can. Don't be hating on old money.

Um, it's none of their business?

Well often, as with many of my friends, they tell me about it. I have my own money so I don't care. I just am answering the questions put forth by OP and PPs. Isn't that what a this chat board is for?! Or is it the DCUM board of rhetorical questions?

well clearly if they are getting the money from their parents, they can't afford it. Use the "free money" to bankroll their lifestyle and all. What's the issue?

Clearly, the cost of living here is too high. At one point, it will not be sustainable. I can't believe people aren't ashamed to take "gifts" from their families as adults.

So many highly educated adults in this part of town still getting handouts from their parents, driving up the price of real estate.
