The are called aides. High schools require that a student be a junior or senior. They do not get credit for it but they do get SSL hours. It has to be approved by the counselor and the kids assistant principal.

Okaaay. Mine did it as a sophomore and lots of sophomores at our school do it. No approvals required, other than the guidance counselor approving it as a schedule selection. She did need to talk directly to the teacher to get the "job" once she knew what period it was being assigned to. No SSL hours. You are correct that it's not a credit course although the teacher did mark attendance and gave an "effort" grade but I am not sure that shows up on the real transcript - will have to look.

MoCo has online Health over the summer. DC did it. I believe it was 6 weeks, although it could have been 4 weeks (this was 2 years ago). DC had to show up at the school once or twice, and everything else was online. While DC wasn't happy to be doing it over the summer, it was a very easy class and not very taxing.

Thanks to you and the previous poster for your suggestions. The possibility of being a teacher assistant never occurred to me and will have my daughter check this possibility at her school. Similar to the other poster, my daughter couldn't wait to get through PE (took it as a freshman) but I'll encourage her to see if there's a semester only gym/sport class she'd be interested in (like yoga) -- I think she's been focused on the more traditional electives which tend to be year long courses. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

No answer for you, but it's frustrating having very few other semester-long classes at our high school to pair it with. My rising sophomore will be taking soccer the second semester, although she swore she would never take PE again.

My oldest is a rising junior in MCPS and has not yet taken the required semester of health (hasn't been able to find a suitable semester long course to pair it with). Can you tell me if there are any disadvantages to waiting until the senior year (particularly in the spring semester) to take this course or if it's better to take it during next year's summer school? Also can students take this course online while also taking a full load classes at school? Thx.
