Also will there be school bus service to Jackson or is the family responsible to drop and pick up the child?

OP here, any recommendations for private psychologists?

I thought the group tests would have been sufficient considering that is what is being offered at schools. If FCPS takes the results of WISC more seriously then perhaps that is what we must do?

17.03 I understand that Jackson is not preferred by many around here although I have also read in these forums that many kids/parents like it there. The only thing I would be worried about is safety and I hopefully will understand the situation better the longer we live here.

I always thought anyone could take AP classes in high school. They aren't related to the AAP program.

Lately I've heard a lot of the AAP kids go on to Luther Jackson these days. I guess you have a year to work that out though.

There are so many tests that my DC can take...which are recommended?
Should I have her take the groups tests from GMU or go to a private psychologist for the in depth test?
I have test results from her previous county but the testing there is different and they advice I have her retested in Fairfax.

07:51 here -- personally I would opt to get a WISC-IV done and I would opt for a private psychologist. The cost difference between a private psychologist and GMU is about $100 more.

Maybe call around and see who might be available for appointments and decide from there?

I would go straight for the WISC IV at GMU. The FCPS AAP office takes he results of that test as the gospel truth.

There is a different screening process for kids moving to the area. I am not sure about how it works.

The is no AAP in H.S. AAP ends after the 8th grade.

Many kids in AAP chose to go to Thoreau over Luther Jackson for various reasons. Most will go back to Madison (some might end up at TJ)

Thank you for all for the replies! Very helpful.

I went to Flint Hill to register and they wanted me to do the general registration first since we speak another language at home. The earliest appointment I got for that was late July so registration can be done only after that!

I read on the FCPS site that I can start the AAP screening process before registration but according to this

http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/packet/ParentInformationPacketnonFCPS.pdf

it looks like the due date for appeals is June 1st for the fall semester. Am I reading it right? Does that mean that it is too late now?

Another question I have is if my child gets into AAP in middle school and decides to go to Jackson can she come back to Madison for High school?

On the other hand if she decides to stay back at Thoreau will she still be able to take Advanced placement classes (if that is what they are called) in Madison?

Thank you!

Flint Hill Elementary AAP students split to Surise Valley and Louise Archer depending on where you live. If you live west of Hunter Mill Road, it's Sunrise Valley and if you live east of Hunter Mill Road it's Louise Archer. Luther Jackson is the AAP center for both in middle school or some children opt to take the honors courses at Thoreau. Flint Hill has a local level IV program where they teach AAP level IV and level III children at their school so either way at the AAP center or base school, she'll probably get some sort of GT service next year.

Since you are new to Fairfax County, your first step is to register your daughter at Flint Hill. This can/should be done now.

http://www.fcps.edu/parents/start/allgrades.shtml

Once she is registered, you can see if she can be immediately placed in Advanced Academics. Follow these steps:

http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/identificationntc.shtml

If you take these steps now, she may be all set in Advanced Academics by the time school starts in September.

Welcome to Fairfax County!

This should answer your questions and provide info about who to contact if you have further questions.

If she is accepted into AAP, she will have two options. 1) Got to the GT center school, which would probably be Louise Archer. Alternatively, since flint hill has Local Level IV, she could attend that program. In the Level IV AAP, all academic classes are with other gt students.

We just moved from Howard Country MD to Vienna and My daughter will be going to 6th grade (Flint Hill ) in the fall. She was in GT at the old school and I have been trying to read up on how the AAP programs work here in Fairfax county.
I am so confused and don't even know where to start. At her old school , she had separate advanced classes in the same school. I learned just today that some schools are GT centers and some are not. How do I find out this information? Our schools are Flint Hill, Thoreau and Madison. If she gets accepted into the AAP program and her school does not offer classes does that mean that she will have to travel to a different school for the classes?
What is a base school, a center, LLIV?
Also the testing is very different in Howard County, they use SCAT which I didn't see int he list of tests in the FCPS website so I am assuming that she will need to be tested prior to school starting?
Thank you for all your help in advance!
